“You know, THAT song!”

We’ve all had that problem…and in 1999, 2 students at the University of California found a solution.

2580 - More popularly known as, Shazam.

Initially, in 2002, the service was launched only in the UK and was known as '2580', as the number was the shortcode that customers dialled from their mobile phone to get music recognised. The phone would automatically hang up after 30 seconds.

Shazam allows users to identify songs, adverts and movies using the microphone in your mobile device.

They started simple; dial the number, play a clip of the unidentified track and you would receive an SMS message with the name of the song and the artist that sang it.

Shazam moved with the times and following the launch of the Apple App Store, they published their first app - The added feature of the app (aside from the interface) was that after sending a user the song results, it would allow you to download that track from iTunes and also send you a link to the YouTube video.

2 years later, Apple announced that Shazam was the 4th most downloaded app….of all time!

Fast forward to 2018

Shazam has:

  • Over 1 billion downloads
  • 150m monthly active users
  • Topped 30 billion searches
  • 1m daily ad clicks
  • 400,000 songs downloaded daily as a result of Shazam searches

So, where did their growth come from and why has it managed to stay at the top for so long?

  • Partnerships - to grow their database of songs, Shazam collaborated with a huge number of companies. They chose to integrate with, rather than compete against, the likes of Apple, Spotify and YouTube.
  • Interactive tools and interface - their interface is super easy to use and can be navigated by even the biggest technophobe.
  • Machine learning - Awesome algorithms make retrieving associated data quick and reliable.
  • Artists win too - Shazam allows an artist to connect with fans, strengthening the relational and loyalty between them

But ultimately….

They kept it simple

The core concept has stayed the same - adding value to artists, brands and ultimately the user, whilst also being able to monetize effectively.

Apple has recently acquired the world leading music recognition service (circa $400m) but it is unclear yet what it's plans are yet.

However, their move over into Movies, TV and interactive marketing is seen as a clear strategy for the future and an area that has massive growth.
